Our Legacy
Following the bifurcation of the district, Lion Greatian Gunawardhana, the first elected District Governor of District 306 B2, launched a meaningful mission to expand Lionism by extending new clubs across the district. As a result of that visionary initiative, the Charter Certificate Presentation of the Lions Club of Minuwangoda Circle was held on 26 August 2005 at Hotel Tamarind Tree, Peelawatta, Andiambalama, under the guidance of Certified Guiding Lion Kamal Jayakody and Guiding Lion Srilal Midellawala. The club was proudly sponsored by the Lions Club of Divulapitiya, marking the beginning of an inspiring chapter in the history of service in Minuwangoda.
With the guidance of Extension Chairperson Lion Upali Gunawardana, the club was officially named the Lions Club of Minuwangoda Circle. Lion Bandula Jayasekaramudali, a distinguished and exemplary leader, assumed office as the Charter President, leading a dedicated team of 34 members. This historic beginning laid the foundation for what would become a proud and enduring legacy of service.
Since its inception, the Lions Club of Minuwangoda Circle has grown into a respected and dynamic force within Lionism. Recognised by Lions Clubs International, the world’s largest service organisation, the club has continuously upheld the true spirit of service through impactful community initiatives. Over the years, the club has served in many important areas including vision care, health, environmental conservation, hunger relief, support for the elderly, and assistance for persons with disabilities. Today, the club stands strong with a vibrant and committed membership of 55 members.
The club has touched countless lives through projects such as vision screening programmes, free health camps, the distribution of essential medicines in rural communities, educational support for children, school-based awareness programmes, and environmental projects such as tree planting. It has also responded with compassion during times of need through relief and welfare initiatives, reflecting the club’s unwavering commitment to the Lions motto, “We Serve.”
The Lions Club of Minuwangoda Circle has always believed that meaningful service also includes investing in future generations. Through the donation of school supplies, the organisation of competitions, awareness programmes on health and safety, and support for children’s education and well-being, the club has consistently worked to build a stronger and brighter community.
It is with deep pride that we acknowledge the continuing dedication of our charter members, whose loyalty and commitment remain a source of strength and inspiration to the club. Lion Upali Gunawardana, Lion Bandula Jayasekaramudali, Lion Athula Gunasekara, Lion Jayantha Abeywickrama, Lion Susil Janaka, Lion Mahesh Silva, Lion U. B. Premathilaka, Lion Bernard Rodrigo, Lion Brian Anthony, Lion Nilantha Costha, and Lion Nalaka Rajasekara have each played a valuable role in preserving the heritage and service spirit of the club. Their enduring presence stands as a living testament to the values on which this club was built.
Throughout its journey, the club has had the honour of producing Principal Cabinet Officers and Cabinet Officers who have rendered significant service to the district. It has also expanded its service footprint by helping establish other clubs, including the Lions Club of Naivala Sentinel, the Lions Club of Maradagahamula Divulapitiya, and the Leo Club of Minuwangoda Circle. These achievements reflect the club’s leadership, maturity, and continuing influence within the district.
Among its proudest accomplishments is the establishment of its own premises, the Lions Activity Centre, which stands as a symbol of the club’s stability, vision, and long-term commitment to service. This centre has become a focal point for community-based programmes and continues to support a wide range of service activities. The club also maintains a library and regularly organises awareness sessions for the benefit of the public, further strengthening its role as a responsible and caring community institution.
In the current Lionistic year as well, the Lions Club of Minuwangoda Circle continues to move forward with renewed energy and purpose. A notable recent milestone was the successful conduct of the club’s Annual Main Fundraiser at Hotel Kanchana, held in the presence of the First Vice District Governor, Lion Gayan Lakmal MJF PMAF. The event was a memorable evening of fellowship and celebration, enhanced by musical entertainment and strong community participation. Importantly, the funds generated will be utilised for the further development of the Lions Activity Centre as well as for the service projects planned for the 2025–2026 Lionistic year.
As the Lions Club of Minuwangoda Circle moves ahead, it does so with gratitude for its rich history, pride in its achievements, and confidence in its future. Built on service, strengthened by fellowship, and guided by compassion, the club continues to be a shining example of Lionism in action.
